There is a joke that goes thus: “Where do you bury something that you do not want anyone to find?”

The response would be: On the second page of Google.

But there is some iota truth to the statement.

On a Google search, about 75% of visitors will never go past the first page.

The implication is that your website cannot afford to rank on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th page of google. You will not get the traffic and clicks you require to make your SEO effort worth the money and time you have spent so far.

And of course you need the organic traffic from Google because about 93% of online users begin their quest from a search engine. Also, every single month, there are over 1 trillion searches!

A good search engine presence has the ability to drive traffic that can grow your business for many years to come.

However, the average website owner does not have the power to rank on the first page of Google for the best keywords.

Already, there are many high-profile websites that capitalize on the top keywords in the industry. Also, there are tons of other bloggers who are trying to rank for that same keyword as well.

This means that the deck is stacked; and it’s not in your favor if you attempt to do it on your own. You don’t need to give up!

What is SEO?

SEO, Search engine optimization, is the process of influencing the positioning of a web page in the unpaid results of a search engine – often referred to as “organic,” “natural,” or “earned” ranking.

Although, over time, search engines became more sophisticated, they cannot comprehend a website like human do.

When put into good use, SEO will assist the search engines in deciding what a page is all about and how beneficial it can be to users. In summary, SEO helps to provide signals which Google and other search engines can use to analyze your website content, and the appropriate ranking.

This is a text that search engines users will type into google to search for any information they are looking for.

Domain Authority:

This tells the ranking a page will get for a given keyword. It is a number determined by moz website which ranges from 0 to 100; 0 being the lowest.

Alt Tags

This is the text description of an image (it shows up when you hover over an image).

Every image needs to have keyword optimized and meaningful alt tags – this is how search engines tell the content of your image and tells what is relevant.

Anchor text

These are words that are clickable. With respect to good SEO practice, the anchor text has to be related to the content of the page you’re linking to.


These are links on other websites that link to your site. Search engines consider backlink as recommendations for a site, depending on the relevance and authority of the linking site.

The more relevant and high-quality backlinks your site has, the higher it will appear in search results.

Bounce rate

This refers to the percentage of visitors who leave your website after just viewing only one webpage.

A high bounce rate implies that visitors do not find your site interesting or relevant to their queries (due to poor content). Google considers this a negative sign about your site.

Defective links

This is a link that leads to nowhere. This could be due to temporarily unavailable websites or programming errors. The job of the crawler becomes more difficult due to defective links; and this could make your site rank lower in search results.

Keyword stuffing

This refers to the excessive use of keywords by a site in an attempt to manipulate its position in search engine results. This is bad practice and should be avoided.

Search engines can detect this abnormality and will penalize such sites.

Internal links

These are links that lead to relevant content within the same website. This is good SEO practice, because to the search engines it means that the content has value.

Nofollow attributes

This is a text (rel=”nofollow”) which is inserted into HTML to ask a Google crawler not no consider a link.

For this reason, websites at the top of Google’s results pages get 36.4% of the clicks missed by websites that rank lower.

Search engine optimization is very key in achieving inbound marketing success. So, if your website is not visible in the first page for your keyword, your traffic from the search engines will be very low.

Google is the most widely used search engine; it is the biggest opportunity for traffic.

But, the question to ask now is, how do I get my website to the top?
